As a child, I learned early that speaking up came with consequences—at school, I got in trouble for talking. At home, I was told to "stay in a child's place," even when my heart held wisdom beyond my years. Add to that the pain of abuse, and eventually, I shut down. My voice got buried under trauma, shame, and silence.

I didn’t know it then, but I was slowly losing connection with the power within me.

All I wanted was to be heard. To be seen. To feel like what I had to say mattered. So I turned to writing—my safe space, where I could speak freely without fear of judgment or rejection. Still, I struggled. Depression followed me. Smiling felt foreign. And like many in my community, I suffered in silence, believing the lie that mental health wasn’t something we talked about, let alone healed.

But God.

In time, I rediscovered a truth I’d heard my whole life but never fully embraced:

“The power of life and death is in the tongue.”

That scripture cracked something open in me. I began to realize that I wasn’t just quiet—I had been silenced. And I wasn’t just soft spoken—I was holding back power that was meant to shift rooms, hearts, and even my own destiny.

I started to do the work.

Therapy. Prayer. Speaking life over myself—out loud. Again and again.

And slowly, the pieces started to come together.

I found my voice.

I found my power.

I found my joy.
